

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick), softened
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease 2 6x3-inch foil loaf pans. Beat together first 5 ingredients until mixture is blended. Add the next 3 ingredients and beat until blended. Do not overbeat. Stir in the dates, walnuts and orange peel.
Divide batter between 2 greased 6x3-inch loaf pans. Place pans on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350° oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until a cake tester, inserted in center, comes out clean. Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes, and then remove loaves from pans and continue cooling on a rack. Brush tops lightly with Creamy Orange Glaze. Yields 2 loaves.
Creamy Orange Glaze:
1 tablespoon cream
1/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts
Stir together all the ingredients until blended.
Note:- Bread freezes beautifully. Wrap in double thicknesses of plastic wrap and then, foil. Remove wrappers while defrosting.
