Old-Fashioned Date Nut Chewies

This delicious cookie is old-fashioned in taste, but very modern in technique. It assembles in seconds and makes a good, solid after school snack. Of course, they are delicious enough to serve as dessert with some fresh fruit.

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 1/2 cups yellow cake mix
2 cups chopped dates
4 tablespoons cinnamon sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts

1 can (14 ounces) condensed milk

In a 9x13-inch pan, melt the butter and spread it evenly over the bottom. Now, layer and sprinkle evenly over the bottom, the cake mix, dates, cinnamon sugar and walnuts. Drizzle the condensed milk evenly over all.

Bake in a 350° oven for about 30 to 35 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Allow to cool in pan. Cut into 1 1/2-inch squares and serve with a faint sprinkling of sifted powdered sugar. Yields 48 delectable chewies.

 

Note: -Cookies freeze beautifully. Freeze in double plastic bags. Remove
wraps while defrosting.
